How do you calculate the U-value?

The regulations for energy performance impose the best U-values. Good to know: the better the insulation, the lower the U-value. But how do you calculate that value exactly? That's extra easy with our practical calculator! The certificate that our calculator provides is very valuable because the calculation is made according to the official standard. What is the difference between daylight size and roof opening?

When ordering a skylight, there are two measurements to consider: the daylight size in the product title (B) and the roof opening (C). The daylight size is the size of the opening through which the light shines. The roof opening is the total size of the hole in the roof that is necessary to install the curb.

Note that the overall size, the total size of the skylight including the flange, is 16 cm larger than the daylight size (B + 16 cm = overall size). This is important to know when ordering the correct size skylight. When renovating a dome, it is best to use the dimensions of the existing skylight as a reference.

What is the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate?

Acrylic and polycarbonate are both materials used for making skylights and roof windows. Acrylic, also known as PMMA or Plexiglas, is a material made from acrylic polymer. Polycarbonate, on the other hand, is a thermoplastic polymer.

The main difference between acrylic and polycarbonate is their strength and impact resistance. Polycarbonate is much stronger than acrylic and is therefore better able to withstand hard impacts and vandalism. Acrylic, on the other hand, is more scratch-resistant and has better optical clarity than polycarbonate.

When choosing between acrylic and polycarbonate, it is important to determine which properties are most important for your application. Both materials are available at Skylux and our experts can help you make the right choice for your project.

When should you choose for Heatstop?

Heatstop is a special coating that can be applied to a skylight to prevent sunlight and heat from penetrating the space underneath. It is especially suitable for spaces that are heavily exposed to the sun and where additional protection against heat and UV radiation is needed, such as greenhouses, porches, and offices with large windows. So if you are looking for extra protection against heat and the sun, using a skylight with a Heatstop coating can be a good choice.

How many dome walls shoudl I choose?

The number of dome walls you need to choose for your skylight depends on various factors, such as the insulation you desire, the application of the skylight, and the desired amount of light. In general, the more walls you choose, the better the insulation value and the less noise and condensation you will have. For example, if you install a skylight in a space you want to insulate, it is advisable to choose a skylight with multiple walls. But if you want more natural daylight, a single-walled skylight is often the best choice. It is always wise to seek advice from a specialist to make the right choice for your specific situation.

What is the advantage of a PVC curb?

A PVC curb offers several advantages compared to other materials, such as wood or metal. For example, PVC is resistant to moisture and mold, which benefits the durability and lifespan of the curb. In addition, PVC is lightweight, which facilitates installation. Moreover, PVC has excellent insulation value, which contributes to better energy efficiency of the roof window.

How does an openable skylight work?

An openable skylight can be quickly and effortlessly installed thanks to the pre-assembled insulating PVC frame with stainless steel hinges attached to the curb. This means no drilling holes and no time-consuming measuring or fitting work anymore! The operating system is also pre-assembled, whether it is a manual or electric spindle for hard-to-reach places or for more comfort. The result is a beautiful and well-groomed appearance of the skylight.

How should I maintain my plastic skylight?

Little work is required for the maintenance of a plastic skylight. Acrylic is self-cleaning and can be cleaned with water and a non-aggressive soap. Do not use abrasives or products that are not suitable for acrylic or polycarbonate such as detergents and solvents, as these can damage the plastic and void the warranty. Skylux offers special cleaning products for acrylic skylight and PVC frames and curbs. Check the fastenings and sealing tape every year and remove tar stains with turpentine and scratches with a suitable polishing cream. Be careful not to spray insect repellent on the skylight.
