Frequently asked questions about skylights

Can I replace my old skylight with a new Skylux skylight?

Yes, that is very simple. Our skylights have universal dimensions. In most cases, you can unscrew the old skylight and place the new one directly on the existing curb. Is your current curb not from Skylux or does it have a different size? Then our universal adapter frame offers the solution. This way, you enjoy an upgrade without any demolition work on the roof.

What is the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate?

The choice depends on your safety requirements. Acrylic (PMMA) is our crystal-clear standard; it is 10 times stronger than glass and highly weather-resistant. We call polycarbonate (PC) the ‘armoured skylight’. This material is virtually unbreakable (250 times stronger than glass), extremely impact-resistant and burglary-resistant. For maximum safety, we always recommend polycarbonate.

How many walls (layers) do I need for good insulation?

The number of walls determines the insulation value (U-value). The more walls, the better the heat stays inside. A single-walled skylight is only suitable for open canopies (carports). A double-walled skylight is sufficient for unheated spaces such as garages. For a heated home or office, a triple-walled skylight is the minimum standard. For maximum energy savings and passive construction, choose a four- or five-walled skylight.

How do I measure the right size for my skylight?

Always order according to the daylight size: the clear opening visible from inside, measured along the inside of the curb, from edge to edge. All our standard sizes (for example 100 × 100 cm) refer to the daylight size.

Replacing an existing skylight or creating a new roof opening? Our measuring guide shows you at a glance how to measure correctly and which size to order.

Does rain make a lot of noise on a plastic skylight?

During heavy rainfall, you will hear tapping sounds on plastic. However, this sound is significantly reduced by choosing a multi-walled skylight. The air layers between the skylight dome walls act as sound insulation. Looking for complete silence? Then consider our glass iWindow flat roof windows, which reduce impact noise to a minimum.

Does a skylight help keep heat out in summer?

As standard, a skylight lets in a lot of light and heat. For south-facing spaces or rooms that heat up quickly, we recommend the Heatstop version. These skylights are fitted with a mother-of-pearl coating that reflects the sun’s infrared rays. This keeps the heat out effectively, while you still enjoy natural daylight.

Sizing

What size skylight do you need?

At Skylux, you always order by daylight size: the clear opening visible from inside.

Your new skylight fits straight onto the curb. Whether you are replacing a skylight or building new.

  1. Daylight size= your order size

The clear opening visible from inside. Measured along the inside of the curb, from edge to edge.

  2. Roof openingstraight curb = daylight size

The opening in your roof. With a straight curb (/00), it equals the daylight size. With a sloped curb (/20 or /30), it is 20 or 30 cm larger.

  3. External skylight size= daylight size + 160 mm

What you measure on the outside of an existing skylight. The flange extends 80 mm on each side. Subtract 160 mm to find your daylight size.

Measure along the inside of the curb, from edge to edge: first the width, then the length. In our online shop, every size is a daylight size.

Replacing an existing skylight? Measure from the outside and subtract 160 mm. An external size of 1160 × 1160 mm becomes a daylight size of 1000 × 1000 mm.

Sizing questions

What is the difference between daylight size and roof opening?

The daylight size is what you see from inside. The roof opening is the opening in your roof. With a straight curb (/00), they are the same size. With a sloped curb (/20 or /30), the roof opening is 20 or 30 cm larger.

Example: sloped curb /20, daylight size 1000 × 1000 mm → roof opening 1200 × 1200 mm.

I am measuring my skylight from the outside. What do I order?

Subtract 160 mm from the external size. That is the flange: 80 mm on each side. An external size of 1160 × 1160 mm gives a daylight size of 1000 × 1000 mm.

You already have a Skylux curb

Measure the clear opening at the top of your curb: width × length. That is your daylight size. This is the size you order, for a skylight and for a flat roof window.

You are creating a new roof opening

First choose your daylight size. Then make the roof opening to size. With a straight curb, it equals the daylight size; with a sloped curb, it is larger.

You have a curb from another brand

No problem. With a renovation frame, you can install a new Skylux skylight or flat roof window on your existing curb. No demolition work required.
